The waters around Sinaloa Sport Fishing (SSF) are centered about one-third of the way down Mexico's Pacific Coast and just a few miles south of the Tropic of Cancer at 23 degrees, 30 minutes north. The city of Mazatlan lies due South of SSF approx. 70 km.
Fishing in the area is characterized by both tropical and temperate influences. The sport fishing action is located at the extreme southern limit of the Sea of Cortez's temperate waters, and also at the extreme northern end of Mexico's purely tropical fishery extending to the Guatemalan border.
Offshore fishing water temperatures in the Mazatlan area therefore may climb into the high-80s in midsummer, accompanied by warm, humid tropical weather, but stiff northern winds and currents may also bring water temperatures as low as the mid-60s in February or March.
The truly unique positioning of this region has kept if completely void of the fishing pressures other regions are encountering. While on the water it is very rare that you will even see another fishing boat. Many of our clients who have fished other areas in Mexico like La Paz, Loreto, Cabo San Lucas, etc find it a very refreshing change.
This range of water temperatures brings major offshore fish species such as striped marlin during the cooler water winter months of December through May, and warm water game fish such as sailfish, dorado, and black and blue marlin from June through November. Offshore runs also catch yellowfin tuna, wahoo and mako shark, and are generally of medium length. Inshore a large variety of species exist like Roosterfish, large Corbina, Robalo, Red Snapper, etc. depending on the time of year. |
